business administration

Gen Mgt
1. a form of management. Business administration is used as a synonym for management, notably in government or the public sector. This use has developed from the administration school of thought established by Henri Fayol, which defines management activities as a set of processes. He argued that to manage was to plan, organize, coordinate, command, and control. These principles were put into exemplary practice by Alfred P. Sloan, Jr. at General Motors and are often seen as characteristic of large bureaucracies.
2. the establishment and maintenance of procedures, records, and regulations in the pursuit of a commercial activity. Business administration involves the conduct of activities leading to, and resulting from, the delivery of a product or service to the customer. Administration is often seen as paperwork and formfilling, but it reaches wider than that to encompass the coordination of all the procedures that enable a product or service to be delivered, together with the keeping of records that can be checked to identify errors or opportunities for improvement.
